Our Sustainers will have early access to our archives project, where we will highlight all of the grantees we have supported in Resist history, as well as updates Resist has made as an institution.

Our general support grants are decided on by a panel of former grantees who are paid and trained to make grants decisions. The Resist staff does not decide where the grants go, instead the frontline communities decide where the resources are most needed.

Prior to 2024, our average grant size was $4,000 and we provided grants to between 150 -200 grantees in our general support cycle. In 2024, we decided to increase our grants to $10,000 and awarded 30 grantees.

Our rapid response grant size is $2,000 and we provide grants to an average of 30-50 groups per year.

Grant panelists undergo a retreat where they form relationships, learn about Resist’s history and work, and discuss resource redistribution. They are provided with a training manual that comes with suggested metrics to determine eligibility and allow for deeper information gathering.

For 2024, our grant-making shifted from redistributing $4,000 grants to 100+ groups in four funding cycles to experimenting with one round of $10,000 funding for 30 frontline groups. Here is the list of grantees.

Founded by the Center for Economic Democracy and Resist and based in Boston, Massachusetts, Movement Sustainability Commons nourishes and sustains people and groups working for justice, economic democracy, and liberation.  We do this by offering affordable and high quality services, practices, spaces, and pathways that support both interdependence and self-reliance for community self-determination.  We aspire to co-create an off-ramp to the non-profit industrial complex that frees people and groups to work cooperatively with emergence, imagination and a focus on living their purpose and sharing their gifts.  We seek to co-create an ecosystem rooted in the following principles:

At Resist, we know that frontline leaders and groups that work for justice and liberation have the heart, knowledge, and tools needed to reimagine and co-create a better world for us all. Justice is Essential provides the community a space to learn from grantees, organizers, and thought leaders on how to address oppression systemically.

• Resist understands that the current way foundations and funders provide resources are often coupled with expectations of measurable outcomes, reporting, and require extensive application processes. Resist also knows that most of the money philanthropy invests goes into the stock market to uphold foundations, instead of distributing those resources to our frontline communities dismantling systems of oppression. We also see how only 7 percent of all foundation money goes to organizations led by people of color. We know this all needs to change.
• Resist not only shifts our own practices to address these issues of inequity, but we organize with others to shift the field of philanthropy in leaning into abundance and recognizing the need to flip power dynamics. We do this through writing, panels, workshops, conversations, framework support, and other support in the field.
