Fuerza Laboral - Power of Workers

We are a workers' rights center that organizes workers in our community to end labor exploitation. Based in Central Falls, Rhode Island and founded in 2006, we educate and train workers in their rights, develop new community leaders, and take direct action against injustices to win concrete victories. We work together with state and national coalitions in order to maximize our impact. Our Organizing Philosophy:At its core, Fuerza Laboral is a center for community organizing. While we believe providing services to our community is important, we know that services often create dependency on the service provider and relegate community members to a relative position of powerlessness. We are not advocates; we do not believe professional staff should speak on behalf of the people. We believe there is no testimony more powerful than that which comes directly from the source. Building shared, lasting power: Fuerza Laboral's goal in organizing workers is to create an environment in which people who share a common problem can work together for its solution, while building shared, lasting power.

GLBT Youth in Iowa Schools Task Force

All students need a safe, supportive atmosphere in which they can learn, including students that are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). Unfortunately, bullying, harassment, and discrimination against LGBT students occurs often in our schools. As these students face verbal and physical harassment; educators, policy makers, parents, and other students are hampered by the lack of quality information and resources to protect LGBT students. However, over the past several years, Iowa has made significant progress in helping create safer schools for LGBT students. Iowa became the 10th state in the nation to pass a comprehensive Safe Schools Law that protects ALL students in 2007. Including the Safe Schools Law was the extension of the Civil Rights law which protects LGBT school staff members from discrimination. Governor Culver, Lt. Governor Judge, and legislative leaders all made historic passage of these laws a reality. But, work remains to be done to protect all students from bullying, harassment, and discrimination. Laws are only good if enforcement and education follows.

Gender Benders

Gender Benders is a grassroots organization for transgender and gender diverse folks in the Southeastern US. We are based in Upstate, SC and we have chapters and partner organizations in Hattiesburg, MS, Clemson, SC, and Hendersonville, NC. Gender Benders started as a group of 3 folks talking about what needs we had as trans and gender diverse people living in an area with no existing resources or support networks - and what we could realistically do to meet those needs with no money. From those conversations we developed a three pronged approach to serving our people. The first leg of what we do is connecting people to the resources they need to lead full and healthy lives. The second leg of what we do is engaging in activism and education work to help create safer communities for our people. Lastly, the third leg of what we do is hold intentional space for people to develop relationships with other trans and gender diverse people who can serve as a support system for each other. We still don't have much money, but today Gender Benders serves over 550 people from across the Southeast.

Gender Justice League

GJL was started by a group of long time Trans*, Queer, and allied activists who were looking to increase the community’s capacity to address cissexism, transphobia, transmisogyny and homo, bi, and queer phobias that Trans*, gender queer, and gender non-conforming people face.Gender Justice League is focused on creating community through advocacy efforts and shared leadership development. Recognizing that only 4% of employees in the major LGBT organizations are Trans* identified and that Trans* people face nearly double the unemployment rate of cis people in this country — GJL is situated in a Gender Justice model that seeks to empower Trans* people to combat the systemic oppression, discrimination, and violence that we face in our daily lives.Gender Justice League is focused on social, economic, and racial justice at the core of our work. Our analysis of Gender Justice focuses on issues that are often left on the sidelines of traditional LGBTQ activism like looking at issues of incarceration and the prison industrial complex, resisting gentrification and issues of homelessness and housing accessibility, and innovative strategies and programs to address unemployment. We believe to tackle these problems we must build our power through organizing and leadership development. As a collective – we are comprised of many individual activists (both old and new to activism) who have come together to work collectively to build our communities power, resilience, and autonomy.
