Peaceful Vocations

Founded out of the grassroots concerns of North Texas Citizens, Peaceful Vocations has grown into an effective vehicle through which many students continue to learn the facts about military enlistment, war, and the many alternatives to the G.I. life.We are an all-volunteer, consensus-based collective, made up of service industry employees teachers, artists, nurses, attorneys, union organizers, veterans, and students.Peaceful Vocations is one of hundreds of organizations working across the nation to counter the military’s presence in public schools. We provide meaningful and necessary information about vocational and higher educational alternatives to military recruitment. We reach students in Fort Worth public schools by tabling during lunch hours, making classroom presentations, having a presence at College Days and Career Fairs, hanging hallway posters, and placing our literature in the counselors’ offices. We provide all of these services at no cost to students. We attend numerous civic events; we provide street theater for the community, and presentations for churches, civic groups, and parents’ groups.

Pennsylvania Coalition for the Fair Sentencing of Youth (PACFSY)

The Pennsylvania Coalition for the Fair Sentencing of Youth is a group of individuals and organizations dedicated to ensuring a fair chance for all of Pennsylvania’s children. The PA Coalition for the Fair Sentencing of Youth was formed in the fall of 2009 to organize individuals and organizations from across the state to work toward the abolition of life without parole sentences for juvenile offenders (JLWOP). JLWOP occurs when a child commits a crime below the age of eighteen and is sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole. Our coalition believes that this practice is ineffective, costly, and inhumane.

People Organized in Defense of Earth and Her Resources (PODER)

Our mission is redefining environmental issues as social and economic justice issues, and collectively setting our own agenda to address these concerns as basic human rights. We seek to empower our communities through education, advocacy and action. Our aim is to increase the participation of communities of color in corporate and government decision making related to toxic pollution, economic development and their impact on our neighborhoods.PODER was formed to increase Austin's residents' participation in corporate and government decisions related to economic development, environmental hazards and the impact on our neighborhoods. PODER was formed by a group of Chicana/o East Austin activists and community leaders after participation in a national meeting with SEMATECH in May 1991. SEMATECH is a non-profit research consortium funded by the federal government and several of the largest U.S.- owned semi-conductor manufacturers in a predominantly Latino neighborhood. As a result of this meeting, and our interest in issues affecting our community, several of the local participants realized the need to form and organize to address the social, economic and environmental impacts of such industries and the potential health hazards on East Austin's communities of color.Historically, communities of color, Latinos, African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Native Americans, have been disproportionately affected by toxic contamination. At the same time, our communities have not benefited equitably from these industries. As we look into our own backyard, we see a power plant, fuel storage tank farms, refineries, lumber companies, and most recently, high tech industries which emit their pollutants into the air we breath, the water we drink and the earth that sustains us. We believe a safe and healthy environment is a fundamental right. In this period of Globalization, there is a need to redefine national and international goals with a broader vision, a vision which honors the sacredness of human life and the environment. We must, therefore, work to create a safe and healthy environment within our own communities and support the efforts of others to do so in communities around the country and the world. Only then can we restore global environmental harmony.

People's Community Medics

The People’s Community Medics (PCM) is a grassroots organization that teaches basic emergency first aid skills free of charge. We were founded in the summer of 2011 by Sharena Thomas and Lesley Phillips. As members of the Oscar Grant Committee we learned that the BART police refused to call an ambulance for 20 minutes for fatally wounded Oscar Grant, despite the passionate pleas for medical help from his friends who were detained at the Fruitvale station by the police. That experience as well as our knowledge that 911 calls often do not result in an ambulance arriving in a timely manner to Black, Brown and poor neighborhoods largely inspired us to teach our people basic emergency first aid so that we can help one another until an ambulance arrives.

People's Durham

People’s Durham is an organization based in and committed to building the political power of the working class through mobilization, education, leadership development, alliance building, and creating our own institutions for survival. We believe that working class people of color and women are the center of this effort to transform society.Currently, workers, and communities of color have little to no influence over decisions that impact our: Land, housing, & public space Food Ability to live in a sustainable, healthy environment Jobs and ability to get what we need to survive Health care and quality of life Education and ideas SafetyWe’re the ones who do the work that makes society move, and we’re the ones who should have the power. In order for that to happen, working class people need organization(s) that will win:Political Power: The ability of our communities to be at the center of the day-to-day decisions that impact our lives through elections, using our bodies and voices creatively, and ultimately changing the way that the whole system works.Economic Power: The ability to create solutions that meet the needs of our communities, value the work that we do and the expertise that we have, and allow us to live in harmony with the natural world around us.Social Power: The ability to use our ideas and cultures to transform our society into one that values cooperation, respect, and sustainability.Racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression have divided working class people and communities of color and repeatedly kept us from winning. We will fight these systems and promote the leadership of women, low-income people and workers, people of color, young people, and queer people.

People's Justice League

People’s Justice League is a grassroots community organization working to support safe streets, campuses, establishments, and gathering places in Southeast Ohio through community education and activism. We know that for many people, navigating public space is fraught with harassment and violence simply because of who they are. Our programming works to address this with a variety of platforms designed to eradicate bias, harassment, discrimination, and abuse targeting any part of a person’s perceived identity. This includes but is not limited to race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and disability. We work to create long term networks of support that will empower our spirits to continue to thrive, despite the oppressions we face.We envision a world free from all forms of domination where all people have free and equitable access to public spaces, services, information, and institutions and no one must fear harm by any person or institution on the basis of perceived identity.

Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign Minnesota

The Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign is building a movement that unites the poor across color lines. Poverty afflicts Americans of all colors. Daily more and more of us are downsized and impoverished. We share a common interest in uniting against the prevailing conditions and around our vision of a society where we all have the right to health care, housing, living wage jobs, and access to quality primary, secondary, and higher education. The Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign includes people of many backgrounds. We are mothers, fathers, children, and grandparents; we are the unemployed, the working poor, the downsized, the homeless, the victims of welfare reform and NAFTA, the cast-asides of the new economy; we are social workers, religious leaders, labor leaders, artists, lawyers, and other people of conscience; we are young and old; we live in rural areas and in urban centers. We are committed to uniting the poor as the leadership base for a broad movement to abolish poverty everywhere and forever. We work to accomplish this aim through the promotion of economic human rights, named in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as Articles 23, 25, and 26. These articles state our right to such provisions as housing, health care, a living wage job, and education. The founding creed of the United States of America, which asserts our rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, inspired the formulation of these human rights. Our government signed the UDHR in 1948; its full implementation would mean that our country would be living out the true meaning of its creed. This American Dream is possible because our country is the richest and most powerful in the world. We do not seek pity. We do seek power to end conditions that threaten all of us with economic human rights violations denying us our birthrights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
