Richmonders Involved to Strengthen our Communities (RISC)

Richmonders Involved to Strengthen our Communities (RISC) is a grassroots congregation-based organization comprising diverse congregations throughout the Greater Richmond region. With 22 diverse member congregations, RISC represents over 5,000 citizens in Richmond city, Henrico and Chesterfield counties. RISC unites the community across socioeconomic, racial, geographic, and denominational backgrounds, including Protestant, Unitarian, and Jewish faith traditions.Across our faith traditions, we are called to seek justice - holding those in power accountable for the fair treatment of all people, especially the poor and oppressed. One person, or even one congregation, cannot hold our public officials accountable alone. Through RISC, we build the power of organized people to achieve a just community. Our mission is to build a powerful community of racially, religiously, and socioeconomically diverse congregations who address the root causes of injustice in the Greater Richmond Region.

Right 2 Survive

Right 2 Survive was founded in 2009 and is a direct action group that educates both houseless and housed people on their civil, human, and constitutional rights. We also work to bridge the gap between housed and un-housed people by clearing away misconceptions and stigmas associated with houselessness and empower houseless people to stand up for them selves when their rights are violated.Every day right here in the United States, millions of houseless individuals are being denied access to adequate shelter, sanitary restrooms in which to perform basic human functions, the ability to congregate into larger groups for safety while they sleep, and many other things that should be basic human rights. The shelter system is overburdened and there are not enough shelter beds to accommodate the houseless population, yet there are laws being passed daily which prohibit people from having a tent or even a tarp to protect them from the elements as they sleep on the street or under bridges. Here in Portland, there is a sit/lie ordinance in effect that prohibits people from sleeping on the sidewalk, in doorways, and even under bridges. We at Right 2 Survive believe sleep and affordable housing are basic human rights and should be treated as such.

Right to Housing Alliance

The Right to Housing Alliance is a human rights organization led by low-income residents. We’re a partnership of community members, organizers, and attorneys working to elevate housing to the level of a human right and secure community control over land. Through direct action, coalition building, education, and advocacy, we’re empowering new community leaders and building a movement to transform the housing system in Baltimore to value the principles of human rights.Right to Housing Alliance grew out of Occupy Our Homes Baltimore, a working group of Occupy Baltimore, in December 2011. Initially working with homeowners facing foreclosure to help them stay in their homes, we soon had to ask ourselves what was going on in those blocks between the addresses of foreclosed homeowners. The housing problems in Baltimore go far beyond the recent foreclosure crisis. There is deep housing inequality stemming from treatment of housing as a commodity rather than a human right.

Rockaway Wildfire

In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, strangers from across New York City became first responders and colleagues. In this moment of crisis, Occupy Sandy stepped in to help organize the massive recovery effort. Residents and Volunteers worked side by side providing essential supplies, clothing and food in Rockaway’s coldest and darkest hours. This immediate relief work dwindled after the Thanksgiving holiday, as residents began to return to their homes and volunteerism decreased. Upon recognizing this shift, The Wildfire Project, Occupy Sandy and local leaders used this reprieve as an opportunity to reassess the needs of the Rockaway Community post Sandy. Through numerous discussions the needs identified as most pressing to improve in the Rockaways were pre-existing systemic and socio-economic issues that were exacerbated merely exacerbated by Superstorm Sandy. Out of this systemic critique Rockaway Wildfire was born; a space where we could collectively identify issues and educate ourselves on how to effectively respond to them in a way that would unite and empower the Rockaway Community.

San Francisco Living Wage Coalition

The Living Wage Coalition is a grassroots movement of low-wage workers and their allies fighting for economic justice. We have been struggling since 1998 to change political priorities so that government does not subsidize poverty wage employers. We are engaged in a transformative re-thinking of the economy that makes the goal of economic development a more prosperous, healthy and livable community. We educate, organize and mobilize to demand that our tax dollars and use of public property do not go to businesses that pay poverty wages. We believe that everyone who works full time should be able to survive on what they earn, without relying on public assistance or charity to support their families. The Living Wage Coalition was initiated in 1998 by labor unions, community organizations and religious congregations to develop a movement led and democratically run by low-wage workers.

Seattle Young People's Project

The Seattle Young People’s Project is a youth-led, adult supported social justice organization that empowers youth (ages 13-18) to express themselves and to take action on the issues that affect their lives.vMost young people cannot vote, do not have financial resources, and are generally not given credit by the adult world for having intelligent opinions. Young people are excluded from the political process and from decisions impacting their schools, neighborhoods and communities.Young people have first hand experience with the issues that are impacting them, but their voices are ignored and misrepresented in the media. Adults are seen as the “experts” on what young people need. Well it’s time for youth to be heard and seen about their views.Youth are on the forefront of every social and political movement for justice. Youth have the powerful ideas and skills needed to make social change. SYPP supports youth in turning their ideas into action. SYPP provides a youth owned organization with resources, office space, and organizing training so youth can work to change the system and be the leaders of our movement for social justice!
