50 Years Ago: The March on the Pentagon

October 21, 2017

Fifty years ago today, thousands of individuals united in Washington, D.C. and displayed one of the many great acts of resistance in US history. They marched on the Pentagon and set in motion the formation of a foundation that pursues that spirit today: Resist

To all of those who bravely resisted and said no to that war - we thank you. Without you, we would not be here today.

All of our founders were a critical part of that moment. Our founding document, A Call to Resist Illegitimate Authority, was written to draw a moral line in the sand and gathered over 20,000 signatures in support.

One of those signatures was of the great historian Howard Zinn, who embodied this spirit and said, "

Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience."

These words couldn't ring more true today. That is why Resist continues to be as important as ever.

Those who marched, burned their draft cards, and refused to fight for an immoral war, set a moral foundation for our work. The groups that we have funded for the past 50 years have continued and built on that legacy.

In the midst of Muslim bans, nuclear proliferation, racism and white supremacy, the pillaging of our environment, assaults on women's rights and LGBTQ rights, and the expansion of vicious corporate capitalism - someone has to resist and thankfully they are. Communities around the country are not sitting by and being "obedient." They are resisting, imagining, and building a better and more just world.

And as we have done for the past fifty years, we are here to support them in continuing that brave and beautiful legacy.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to those who resisted back then and to those who continue to resist today.

PS: Many of our founders are putting on a special event in Washington, D.C. this weekend commemorating this anniversary. They would love to have you!
