Our History Matters': Providence Students Rally for Ethnic Studies Curriculum

January 20, 2016

PROVIDENCE — More than 75 students and adults rallied in front of the school administration building Wednesday to call on the district to add an ethnic studies course for all high school students.

Interim Supt. Christopher N. Maher, who attended the event, said he has already signed the Providence Student Union's MoveOn petition and promised to meet with the youth. He said the timing was perfect because the district is poised to examine the curriculum now that a new curriculum director has been hired.

"The energy of the youth is inspiring," Maher said. "As a white person, I benefited from ethnic studies."

The event kicked off the PSU's new #OurHistoryMatters campaign, which students hope will fix what they say is a lack of representation of the district's mostly minority student population in the district's curriculum.
