Resistance, Rest, and Restoration: Resist Office Closed 4/13-4/17

April 10, 2020

Dear Resister,

Resist will be closed during the week of April 13th - 17th. We will resume operations on Monday, April 20th with adjusted daily schedules. Below is a note  from Lawrence Barriner II, Resist’s Board Chair, about the importance of resisting false choice, rest and strategy.

“As Audre Lorde said, ‘Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.’

Resist is doing what it has done from day one: challenge false choices. The world is not in a ‘business as usual’ moment and we shouldn’t pretend that the pace we were moving at before can continue.

Resist supports people’s movements for justice and liberation and that requires taking care of ourselves. Resistance is only as powerful as the people who resist and if the staff collective is not well, the work will not be well. The board stands in full support of the staff collective who has spoken loud and clear: in order to be clear-eyed and strategic, we need to slow down to refocus on the essential. We trust and believe that this stance, resisting the false choice between rest and strategy as well as moving at a pace that supports the depth of transformation we and the world needs, will support our grantees by allowing our survival and our thriving.”

We are grateful for the support of our board as we move into deeper into value alignment and invite our peers in the non-profit sector to reflect on how we want to respond to this moment. How will we commit to coming out on the other end of this pandemic transformed? Want to learn more about how Resist is responding? You can read the message to our community here.

In solidarity,

Resist Staff Collective
